Montbéliard is een arrondissement van het Franse departement Doubs in de regio Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. De onderprefectuur is Montbéliard . Oorspronkelijk werd het arrondissement opgericht op 17 februari 1800 als het arrondissement Saint-Hippolyte, in 1816 werd de onderprefectuur verplaatst naar Montbéliard.
Montbéliard is mentioned as early as 983 as Mons Beliardae. The County of Montbéliard or Mömpelgard was a feudal county of the Holy Roman Empire from 1033 to 1796. In 1283, it was granted rights under charter by Count Reginald. Its charter guaranteed the county perpetual liberties and franchises which lasted until the French Revolution in 1789.

Montbéliard is a subprefecture of the Doubs department, the capital of the arrondissement of Montbéliard and the administrative centre (French: chef-lieu) of the canton Montbéliard formed by 4 communes, including Montbéliard, with 30,173 inhabitants (2014). It is part of the intercommunality Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération.

In 1816 Montbéliard replaced Saint-Hippolyte as subprefecture. The arrondissement of Baume-les-Dames was disbanded in 1926. [4] The arrondissement of Pontarlier was expanded in January 2009 with the two cantons of Pierrefontaine-les-Varans and Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp from the arrondissement of Besançon, and the canton of Le Russey from the arrondissement of Montbéliard.
