The Hessian grand ducal family in May 1875. Elisabeth was born on 1 November 1864 as the second child of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and Princess Alice, daughter of Queen Victoria. Though she came from one of the oldest and most noble houses in Germany, Elisabeth and her family lived a rather modest life by royal standards.

Elizabeth of Hesse and by Rhine (1 November 1864–18 July 1918) was a daughter of Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. She became the wife of Grand Duke Sergei of Russia who was killed with a bomb in 1905. She was killed with her sister Alexandra Feodorovna by Bolsheviks on 18 July 1918.
Marie of Hesse and by Rhine was the youngest child of Princess Alice and Louis IV of Hesse. In 1878, diphtheria swept through Hesse. Marie, together with her brother Ernst, and her sisters Victoria, Irene and Alix, fell ill. She died of diphtheria at the age of four and was buried with her mother, who died a few weeks later of the same disease.
