Celbridge is a town and townland on the River Liffey in County Kildare, Ireland. It is 23 km west of Dublin. On that route lies Tea Lane, so called because of the Yorkshiremen who came to work at the local mill. They were tea drinkers and had a habit of throwing their tea leaves out onto the street. Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to East Asia which probably originated in the borderlands of southwestern China and northern Myanmar. The old church and graveyard were, according to tradition, established by St Mochua around 600 AD along the Slí Mhór, one of Ireland’s ancient paths that link Dublin Bay to Galway Bay. This graveyard on Church Road, familiarly known as Tea Lane, is perhaps the earliest evidence of settlement in Celbridge, and from here our village evolved.
