Odo I ( Eudes I ), called “the Foolish” (fatuus), was the ruler of Saint-Simon. The last Carolingian male (from its branch Herbertines), he was the only son of Herbert IV, Count of Vermandois and Adele of Valois . Following the marriage of his sister, Adelaide, Countess of Vermandois, to Hugh, Odo was disinherited and Hugh inherited Vermandois.
Death and legacy. Herbert II died on 23 February 943 at Saint-Quentin, Aisne (the capital of the county of Vermandois) from natural causes. [13] The story of him being hanged by king Louis IV (see fig. above) during a hunt is fictitious. [b] His vast estates and territories were divided among his sons. [14]
The eldest son of Hugh and Adela was count Raoul I (c. 1120–1152), who married Petronilla of Aquitaine, sister of the queen, Eleanor, and had by her three children: Raoul (Rudolph) II, the Leper (count from 1152–1167); Isabelle, who possessed from 1167 to 1183 the counties of Vermandois, Valois and Amiens conjointly with her husband, Philip, Count of Flanders; and Eleanor.
The army of Hugh the Great was formed after the Council of Clermont, led by Pope Urban II in November 1095. Hugh, son of Henry I of France, and his wife Anne of Kiev, was Count of Vermandois, de jure uxoris, due to his marriage to Adelaide of Vermandois. Hugh became Count of Vermandois, following Adelaide's father's death. In 1104, Adelaide married Renaud II, Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis. By this marriage, Adelaide had a daughter, Margaret of Clermont. In 1102, Adelaide was succeeded by her son, Ralph I. Adelaide died in 1120, being the last Carolingian to hold the County of Vermandois.

Adele of France. Luitgarde of Vermandois ( c. 914 – 9 February 978) was a French noblewoman from the Herbertian dynasty. She was a countess consort of Rouen and Normandy by her first marriage, and a countess consort of Blois and Chartres by her second. She was a daughter of Herbert II of Vermandois, and Adele, daughter of Robert I of France. [1]
