10 de oct. de 2020 · Calvin Coolidge. Thirtieth President, 1923-1929. Campaign: In 1923, Vice President Calvin Coolidge was sworn in after President William G. Harding died in office. Coolidge inherited many of Harding’s scandals, which he was able to handle with considerable ease. In 1924, he successfully ran his campaign on his ability to keep cool under fire.
The Harding-Coolidge team won easily. Harding died in 1923 and Coolidge became the next president. He was inaugurated at his family farm in Vermont by his father John Calvin Coolidge Sr. Coolidge finished Harding's term and was elected in 1924 to continue to be the country's president.
Despite his popularity, Coolidge’s time in the White House was touched by tragedy. On July 7, 1924, the president’s son, Calvin Jr., died at Walter Reed Hospital of blood poisoning. In 1890, Abraham Lincoln’s only grandson, Abraham “Jack ” Lincoln II, also 16 years old, died from a similar blood poisoning after a French surgeon performed a procedure to remove an abscess under his arm.
After the conventions and the death of his younger son Calvin, Coolidge became withdrawn; he later said that "when he [the son] died, the power and glory of the Presidency went with him." [137] It was the most subdued Republican campaign in memory, partly because of Coolidge's grief, but also because of his naturally non-confrontational style. [138]

His father was a justice of the peace and actually delivered the oath of office to his son when he won the presidency. His mother died when Coolidge was 12. He had one sister named Abigail Gratia Coolidge, who sadly died at age 15.
