Baseia-se na peça (incompleta) do dramaturgo alemão Georg Büchner intitulada Woyzeck. para três actos com cinco cenas cada. O trabalho foi iniciado em 1917 após Berg ter sido autorizado a deixar o seu regimento durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial.
