When Bulgaria was liberated from the Ottomans in 1878, Veliko Tarnovo was once more the capital, but it was very short lived. That vote I mentioned earlier, made Sofia the new capital in 1879 and parliament was moved. In 2019 Veliko Tarnovo was declared the historical and spiritual capital of Bulgaria, so hopefully that lessened the sting.
