The San Andreas Fault is the sliding boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. It slices California in two from Cape Mendocino to the Mexican border. San Diego, Los Angeles and Big Sur are on the Pacific Plate. San Francisco, Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada are on the North American Plate.

The inset shows these plates to be the Cocos plate and the North American plate. Note that the dark blue line does not run further up the coast. There the Pacific plate and the North American plate are passing side-by-side. The San Andreas Fault is a well known example of this side-by-side type of motion, called strike-slip.
