En mai 1954, le prince Bernhard des Pays-Bas crée le club Bilderberg. Le premier forum tire son nom de l’hôtel qui accueille la première manifestation. Il se déroule à Oosterbeek, aux Pays-Bas (il possède désormais des bureaux à Leyde, dans le même pays). Le banquier américain David Rockefeller participe à cette première édition.
