La storia della Corsica, in cui l'insediamento umano è testimoniato almeno dal X millennio a.C., si collega per alcuni tratti a quella della Sardegna, con la quale ebbe in più epoche punti di contatto, e dopo aver subito numerose dominazioni (come quella genovese) fa parte, dal XVIII secolo in avanti, a quella della Francia continentale. The island was known in Ancient Greek as Kyrnos (Κύρνος) and in Latin as Cyrnus or Corsica. Kyrnos may be derived from a local, Corsican toponym. Scholarship is divided on an origin from a pre-Roman Corsican language word, kors-, meaning 'treetop' according to Eustathius, or rather *krs- (head).
