[1] [3] Formerly a safe Conservative seat, Stroud has been a marginal seat since 1997, changing hands four times in seven elections (in 1997, 2010, 2017 and 2019).

The exception was the Southampton Plot in favour of Mortimer, involving Henry, Baron Scrope, and Richard, Earl of Cambridge (grandfather of the future King Edward IV), in July 1415. Mortimer himself remained loyal to the King.
