The House of Lords Act 1999 (c. 34) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that reformed the House of Lords, one of the chambers of Parliament. The Act was given Royal Assent on 11 November 1999. [3]

La House of Lord Act (1999) es el primer paso de la reforma emprendida por el gobierno laborista que llegó al poder en 1997. El objetivo a largo plazo es la eliminación de los Lores hereditarios, si bien de forma interina siguen existiendo 92 que son elegidos entre los aristócratas.
In 1999, the Labour government brought forward the House of Lords Act removing the right of several hundred hereditary peers to sit in the House. The Act provided, as a measure intended to be temporary, that 92 people would continue to sit in the Lords by virtue of hereditary peerages, and this is still in effect.

Before the 1999 Act, the House of Lords included over 600 hereditary peers. Of these, the largest group were Conservative. In 1997, a new Labour Government was elected.
