Umm Saad (Arabic: أم سعد / ALA-LC: Umm Saʻd) is a novella written by fiction writer and journalist Ghassan Kanafani. The book discusses themes of war, patience, and resistance through a first point of view perspective. Upon its release, its political and social themes were generally praised.
Perhaps the most notorious moment of political awareness of the peasant Umm Saad is provided in the first story “Umm Saad and the War That Ended.” Here, she recounts that her son has been imprisoned, but that she is confident that he will one day leave.
Umm Saad allegorizes the struggles of Palestinians to reclaim their land. A poor peasant woman, the titular heroine embodies the intimate connection between Palestinians and their land, acting as a helper to combative men and a primal symbol for attachment to the enduring land.
