Archduke Karl Ludwig Josef Maria of Austria (30 July 1833 – 19 May 1896) was the younger brother of both Franz Joseph I of Austria and Maximilian I of Mexico, and the father of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (1863–1914), whose assassination ignited World War I.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria (18 December 1863 – 28 June 1914) was the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary. His assassination in Sarajevo was the most immediate cause of World War I.
Born in Vienna on 30 July 1833, Archduke Karl Ludwig was the third son of Archduke Franz Karl and Sophie of Bavaria. The archduke was said to be rather simple and was overshadowed all his life by his elder brothers Franz Joseph and Ferdinand Maximilian (later emperor of Mexico).
Archduke Charles Louis John Joseph Laurentius of Austria, Duke of Teschen (German: Erzherzog Karl Ludwig Johann Josef Lorenz von Österreich, Herzog von Teschen; 5 September 1771 – 30 April 1847) was an Austrian field-marshal, the third son of Emperor Leopold II and his wife, Maria Luisa of Spain.
Archduke Karl Ludwig was born in Florence on 5 September 1771. He was the fifth of the sixteen children born to the prolific union of Archduke Peter Leopold, Grand Duke of Tuscany (later Emperor Leopold II) and Maria Luisa of Naples and Sicily from the Bourbon dynasty.
Archduke Karl Ludwig is described as an upright family man. He was the only one of Franz Joseph’s brothers to have surviving male offspring who could continue the ruling branch of the dynasty.
