He purchased a 16km swathe of land on the northwest coast, between Valldemossa and Deià, building an enormous estate which also included Miramar, a historic Franciscan monastery, and Son Marroig, now a public museum.

The new ruling dynasty led Portugal to the limelight of European politics and culture. They created and sponsored literature, such as a history of Portugal, by Fernão Lopes.
