29 de may. de 2024 · In thinking about libertine poetry and, more specifically, about the libertine lyric ‘I’ of ‘The Imperfect Enjoyment’ and ‘The Maim’d Debauchee’, this reading exploits the tension between how Rochester’s poetry typifies—or became the source for typifying—the libertine and how it might signal the specifics of a new kind of interiority.

Though Hess focuses on poetry, he acknowledges that concomitant discourses of the self were seen “weaving through almost every discourse and institution in a different but related way” (Hess 2005 , 3).
