The immediate cause was the death of the childless Charles II of Spain in November 1700, which led to a struggle for control of the Spanish Empire amongst supporters of the claimant Bourbon and Habsburg dynasties.

Se convierte posteriormente en el virreinato de Nueva España, que será ampliado desde Florida hasta Yucatán y Centroamérica (Alvarado, Montejo…).
