The Earl died in 1594 and Lady Jane married thirdly (contract dated at Elgin 10th December 1599), Alexander Ogilvie of Boyne, who, according to the Scots Peerage, 'did not survive the marriage many years.'
Sir George Ogilvy of Dunlugas built the castle in the late 16th century. Occupation continued until after 1723. [2] Charles McKean suggested that building was slightly earlier, constructed by Alexander Ogilvy of Boyne before 1575 for his bride, Mary Beaton, a companion of Mary, Queen of Scots, brought up at the French royal court. [3]
Five years later, on 10 December 1599, Jean married her third and last husband, Alexander Ogilvy of Boyne, the widower of Mary Beaton, one of Queen Mary's celebrated quartet of ladies-in-waiting who had died in 1598.
