He was a fine ruler who did much for Brazil and held the nation together during chaotic times. He was an even-tempered, intelligent man who was generally respected by his people.
Upon leaving Brazil, Pedro II may not have anticipated that his exile would be permanent. While on the Alagôas, the boat carrying the royal party to Europe, Pedro II generally seemed “resigned to the loss of his throne” and even mentioned plans “for study and for visits in Portugal” [75].
