European listeners may well have been curious about this Sibelius Seven. Rather like the Berlin Classics set conducted by Sanderling it has had little column space in the review magazines. This treatment is unworthy. Abravanel (1903-1993) was conductor of the Utah SO from 1947 to 1979.
Sound Quality: 7. These performances of Sibelius’ last three symphonies are a mixed bag, yet they have undeniable attractions. Maurice Abravanel manages a very satisfyingly heroic coda to the finale of the Fifth, but the ending of the same symphony’s first movement is undermined by timpani that seemingly get lost on the closing page.

26 de ago. de 2011 · Maurice Abravanel (1903-1993) turned the Utah Symphony, during his tenure there (1947-1979), into a first-tier orchestra that can compete with the best. These Sibelius recordings, taken in 1977, are among the very best records of their collaboration.
