Muir Central College, c. 1877. Muir Central College in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) in northern India was a college of higher education founded by William Muir in 1872. It had a separate existence to 1921, when as a result of the Allahabad University Act it was merged into University of Allahabad. [1]
Established on 23rd September 1887, it is the fourth oldest University of India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras University. The credit for conceiving a large Central College in Allahabad (now named as Prayagraj), eventually to develop into a University, goes to Sir William Muir, Lt. Governor of United Provinces.
Its origins lie in the Muir Central College, named after Lt. Governor of North-Western Provinces Sir William Muir in 1876, who suggested the idea of a Central University at Prayagraj, which later evolved to the present university. It was known as the "Oxford of the East".
13 de jul. de 2019 · Once known as the ‘Oxford of the East’, Muir Central College was established in Allahabad by Sir William Muir, the then Lieutenant Governor of the North-Western Provinces. The foundation stone of the college was laid on December 9, 1873, eventually merging with Allahabad University in 1922.

About. The Department of Arabic & Persian is an old as the Muir Central College, Allahabad itself. The renowned scholar Maulavi Zakaullah of Delhi had the honour to grace the chair as the first Head of Arabic and Persian Department. His ancestors were great scholars and had the opportunity to teach the Moghal Princess for many generations.
14 de jul. de 2022 · Likewise, Muir Central College in Allahabad had been an affiliate of Calcutta until its faculty, along with the faculty of several other affiliated colleges, incorporated the University of Allahabad in 1887. Later, the Persian curriculum at schools inherited the legacies of the University of Calcutta Persian studies canon.
