Mary Williamson Averell Harriman (July 22, 1851 – November 7, 1932) was an American philanthropist and the wife of railroad executive E. H. Harriman. Born in New York to a successful family, Averell married Harriman in 1879. Averell's father introduced Harriman to the railroad business.

William Averell Harriman was born in New York City, one of six children of railroad baron Edward Henry Harriman [1848-1909] and his wife Mary Williamson Averell. The elder Harriman had worked his way from a $5 per week job as an office boy to the head of the Union Pacific Railroad, and left a fortune estimated at $70 to $100 million at his death.

Averell, a banker in Ogdensburg who was also president of the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad Company. They had two sons, E. Roland and W. Averell.
