Frances Stewart (née Howard), Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, Countess of Hertford (27 July 1578 – 8 October 1639) was the daughter of a younger son of the Duke of Norfolk. An orphan of small fortune, she rose to be the only duchess at the court of James I of England.
Frances Teresa Stewart, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox (8 July 1647 – 15 October 1702) was a prominent member of the Court of the Restoration and famous for refusing to become a mistress of Charles II of England.
The Duchess of Richmond is the wife of the Duke of Richmond, an extant title in the Peerage of England that has been created four times, originally in 1525.
The Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, "the double Duchess" as she was dubbed by court observers, was all but inconsolable, insisting that she would never marry again - unless, she added, the King of England himself were to ask her. Frances Howard was clearly a woman who liked to keep her options open.
Frances Howard (1578-1639) was considered one of the great beauties of the Jacobean Court, and was also wealthy, being the granddaughter of Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk.
8 de nov. de 2016 · Amongst the contents of the Fairclough Collection of engraved portraits, relating to political and social history in 17th century Britain, we have recently discovered this delicately executed miniature of Frances Stuart (née Howard), Duchess of Richmond and Lennox, who died in 1639.
Frances Howard’s third husband, the Duke of Lennox, was created the first Duke of Richmond and Lennox in 1623, earning her the nickname of ‘Double Duchess’. She is portrayed wearing an eye-catching low-cut bodice embroidered in silk and gold threads, and a pendant ornament of a heart and half moon associated with the Lennox family.
