Due to remortgaging her house, her monthly bill went from $300 to $1000. She also had to pay taxes on the entire amount, despite Colombo taking half of it.

Gloria Brown joined the Forest Service in 1974 as a dictation transcriber and retired in 2007 as a GS-15 supervisor of the Los Padres National Forest. That’s nearly as high as you can go in government service and she’d likely have advanced further, but cancer struck.
From an unlikely beginning as an agency transcriptionist in her hometown of Washington, DC, Gloria Brown became the first African American woman to attain the rank of forest supervisor at the US Forest Service.
