His father was a pediatrician and, as in the show, Collin was in medical school when he joined the Comedian Harmonists. In real life, he didn’t audition for the group.

His parents divorced in 1906 and his mother resumed using her maiden name, Collin. His singing talent was discovered early on, so he received violin and singing lessons.
