Campbell was the son of Colin Campbell, 6th Earl of Argyll and Agnes Keith . His nickname, "Gillesbuig Grumach", is the Gaelic for "Archibald the Grim".

  3. When Archibald Campbell 7th Earl of Argyll was born on 25 August 1576, in Inveraray, Argyll, Scotland, his father, Colin Campbell 6th Earl of Argyll, was 34 and his mother, Agnes Anna Keith, was 46. He married Agnes Douglas of Morton - Countess of Argyll on 24 July 1592.

There were subsequent additions to the Argyll estates, including Lismore in the 19th century, but the Clackmannanshire estate was apparently disposed of in the late 18th or early 19th century.

  6. Archibald Campbell, Marquess of Argyll, was the eldest son of Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll, by his first wife Agnes Douglas, daughter of William Douglas, 6th Earl of Morton, and was educated at St Andrews University, where he matriculated on 15 January 1622.
