Charles Howard, 2nd Earl of Nottingham (17 September 1579 – 3 October 1642) of Effingham, Surrey was the second (but eldest surviving) son of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham. His mother was the former Catherine Carey.

Charles Howard, 2nd Baron of Effingham, Lord High Admiral, commander of the flagship 'Ark Royal' against the Spanish Armada. Created Earl of Nottingham in 1596. Note that the title became extinct after the death of his second eldest son, the third Earl, in 1681.
Charles Howard, 1st earl of Nottingham was an English lord high admiral who commanded England’s fleet against the Spanish Armada. Although he was not as talented a seaman as his subordinates Sir Francis Drake and John Hawkins, Howard’s able leadership contributed greatly to this important English.
In July 1563, Catherine married Charles Howard (1536–1624), later 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham, Lord High Admiral of England, and first Earl of Nottingham (1597). [3] Catherine was appointed First Lady of the Bedchamber by 1572. [4]
