Christian Ferdinand Abel ( Hannover, 1682 - Köthen, 3 de abril de 1761) fue un compositor alemán del barroco, virtuoso del violonchelo y de la viola da gamba. Christian Ferdinand Abel (July or August 1682, Hanover, Germany – buried 3 April 1761 (or 1737?), Köthen, Germany) was one of the most famous German Baroque violinists, cellists and especially viol virtuosos. His father was the composer, violinist and organist Clamor Heinrich Abel.

Carl Friedrich Abel (1723-1787) was born in Köthen, a small German city, where his father, Christian Ferdinand Abel, had worked for years as the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra. In 1723 Abel senior became director of the orchestra, when the previous director, Johann Sebastian Bach, moved to Leipzig.
