  6. Artist or producer of 3 portraits. This portrait. The beautiful and enigmatic Dorothy McNeill was working as a secretary and attending evening art classes when John met her in 1903. He viewed her as a near mythical being and renamed her Dorelia. She was his lover and muse for the rest of his life.

  7. Augustus John and Dorelia McNeill lived at Alderney Manor, Dorset, from August 1911 until March 1927. The house and gardens there became an eloquent expression of Dorelia's personality, and vagrants of all kinds were encouraged to make free of the grounds.
