Hugh, Earl of Ross. Hugh [probably Gaelic: Aodh ], was the third successor of Ferchar mac in tSagairt as Mormaer of Ross (1323–1333). Biography. Hugh de Ross was the eldest son and heir of William II, Earl of Ross by his wife Euphemia de Berkeley, or Barclay. Hugh was a favorite of King Robert I of Scotland, who endowed him with many lands.

The Earl or Mormaer of Ross was the ruler of the province of Ross in northern Scotland . Origins and transfers. In the early Middle Ages, Ross was part of the vast earldom of Moray. It seems to have been made a separate earldom in the mid 12th century, when Malcolm MacHeth is found designated Earl of Ross.

Hugh Ross of Rarichies who later became the 1st of Balnagowan was descended from Aodh, 4th Earl of Ross. He took over as Chief of the Clan Ross when Uilleam III 5th Earl of Ross died in 1372, however the title of Earl of Ross had gone elsewhere (see above).
