Be a Brother is the third album by Big Brother and the Holding Company, released in October 1970. It was their first album after Janis Joplin's departure. Recruited in her place were guitarist David Shallock and singer-songwriters Nick Gravenites and Kathi McDonald.

How Hard It Is is the fourth and final studio album by Big Brother and the Holding Company, released in August 1971. The track "Buried Alive in the Blues" was originally written by guest singer Nick Gravenites for Janis Joplin who died before she could record her vocal.

And yet psychedelic San Franciscans Big Brother And The Holding Company did carry on, and these two later albums of deeply funky, soulful blues rock are a testament to their resilience.

When Janis Joplin left Big Brother to form her Kozmic Blues Band in late 1968, disbanding seemed the only option for her old group; especially as guitarist Sam Andrew had followed her.
Big Brother And The Holding Company were formed at the end of 1965. The initial line-up of the group was Sam Andrew, James Gurley, Peter Albin and Chuck Jones. Chuck Jones was replaced by David Getz in early 1966. Janis Joplin joined the group later in 1966.
