Benjamin Elijah Mays (August 1,1894 – March 28,1984), the namesake of Benjamin E. Mays High School, was an American Baptist minister and American Civil Rights leader who is accredited with laying the intellectual foundations of the American Civil Rights Movement.
In September of 1981, the new and much anticipated Benjamin Elijah Mays High School opened it's doors. After the esteemed Southwest Atlanta High School officially closed in June of 1981, Mays was on the watch-list for all of Atlanta to see.
