Bess of Hardwick was one of the most powerful and wealthy women in Elizabethan England, second only to the Queen. She was a shrewd business woman, increasing her assets with numerous enterprises and properties.

Death: 13 February 1608. Bess died at her beloved Hardwick Hall – she was around eighty-one years old, an astonishingly old age by the standards of the time.
