Downside School (simply referred to as Downside) is an 11–18 mixed, Roman Catholic, independent, day and boarding school in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset, England. It was established in 1614 and is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clifton.
In April 1814, the current School site was bought for £7,300 at Stratton-on-the-Fosse in Somerset. The monks and boys walked from Acton Burnell to the new School, a distance of 154 miles. A cedar tree was planted at the entrance to the grounds and still stands today.
A leading Catholic independent boarding school, Downside is one of England’s oldest and most distinguished schools. The School is situated on a magnificent 500-acre campus in Somerset, only 12 miles south of the city of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
As one of the remaining traditional full boarding schools in the UK, Downside School life revolves around the six boarding houses: First, Second and Third Form boys join Powell House, before moving up to one of three senior boys’ houses; Barlow, Roberts or Smythe.
