Maria Wodzińska, primo voto Skarbkowa, secundo voto Orpiszewska (7 January 1819 – 7 December 1896), was a Polish artist who was once engaged to composer Frédéric Chopin.
Maria Wodzińska was born in Warsaw to an aristocratic family in 1819. When she was thirteen, her family moved to Geneva. She studied piano with John Field, as well as art. With her talent and charms, she quickly became the bright light of the household. When she was sixteen, her family moved to Dresden.
Frédéric Chopin had turned twenty-five when he fell passionately and hopelessly in love with sixteen-year old Maria Wodzińska. He had known her as a child, and “used to chase her through the rooms at Pszenny.”
