Es hijo de Roger de Clare († 1173) y Matilde, hija de James de St Hilaire, un noble en posesión de Inglaterra y Bretaña. Se casó Amicie († 1225), hija y co-heredera de Guillermo de Gloucester († 1183), 2 º conde de Gloucester.
RICHARD [DE CLARE] Lord of Clare, Earl of Hertford, also lord of Clare, &c., son and heir. he married Amice, daughter and in her issue heir, of William [FitzRobert], EARL OF GLOUCESTER. He died November 1217.
