The Old English Baron is an early Gothic novel by the English author Clara Reeve. It was first published under this title in 1778, although it had anonymously appeared in 1777 under its original name of The Champion of Virtue, before Samuel Richardson 's daughter, Mrs Bridgen, had edited it for her.
A tale of violence, tragedy, and virtue, this 1795 version of Clara Reeve’s The Old English Baron (1778) takes place in France and explores the life of an orphan who battles political pressures and rises through the nobility.

Posteriormente escribió varias novelas, de las cuales solo una es recordada: The Champion of Virtue, conocida más tarde como The Old English Baron [El viejo barón inglés, 1778], escrita a imitación de, o rivalizando con, El castillo de Otranto, de Horace Walpole, junto con la que a menudo se ha editado.
They included five novels, of which only The Champion of Virtue and The Old English Baron (1777) became well known. The latter was written in imitation of The Castle of Otranto or as a rival to it. The two have often been printed together.
