La Universidad de Ámsterdam es una de las instituciones de educación superior más importantes de los Países Bajos. La institución hunde sus raíces en el siglo XVII, con la creación en 1632 del Athenaeum Illustre (Ateneo Ilustre), que formaba a sus estudiantes en las artes del comercio y en filosofía.
