Early life. Career. Death and legacy. References. External links. Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland (17 March 1682 – 4 July 1726) was a British Army officer, peer, Whig politician and colonial administrator who served as the governor of Jamaica from 1721 to 1726.

The eldest surviving son of William and Frances he was Marquis of Tichfield, Viscount Woodstock, Baron Cirencester and in 1716 Duke of Portland. He commanded a troop of Life Guards, was a Member of Parliament and Governor of Jamaica 1721-1726.
In 1716 Henry was created 1st Duke of Portland and Marquess of Titchfield, largely in memory of his illustrious father. Having inherited vast estates, he should have been extremely prosperous, but suffered heavy losses when the South Sea Bubble burst in 1720.

19 de sept. de 2022 · Hans Willem Bentinck’s eldest surviving son, Henry, carried on the family legacy as a chief supporter of the Whig political agenda in Britain—that is a limited, Protestant monarchy—and was therefore created 1 st Duke of Portland by the new Hanoverian regime in 1716.
In 1990, after the extinction of the male line from his half-brother the 1st Duke of Portland, his descendant Henry Bentinck, 7th Count Bentinck became the 11th Earl of Portland.
