On February 18, 1942, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra recorded the song with vocals by Tex Beneke, Marion Hutton, and The Modernaires. The 78 single was released on RCA Bluebird Records on March 6, peaking at no. 2 on Billboard.
Hutton was born as Marion Thornburg in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the elder sister of actress Betty Hutton. They were raised in Battle Creek, Michigan. The sisters' father abandoned the family when they were both young; he later committed suicide. Their mother worked a variety of jobs to support the family until she became a successful bootlegger.
