30 de ene. de 2024 · This rather huge release is divided into three. The first three CDs reissue all of the dates that Byas made for the Savoy, National, and Majestic labels. Of those 76 performances, 17 were previously unreleased with all but one (“Danny Boy”) being an alternate take.

23 de mar. de 2024 · Don Byas (1912-72) was a swing-era musician, several years older than Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, who were the oldest of the beboppers. Classically trained on violin, clarinet and alto saxophone, he switched to tenor saxophone on moving to the West Coast in the 30s.
27 de feb. de 2024 · As the new 10-CD Classic Don Byas Sessions 1944-1946 from Mosaic Records demonstrates, Byas had a complete understanding of improvisation, both on up-tempo numbers and sultry ballads. He was stunning on his own terms, but it's also clear that he didn't have that little something extra that turns exceptional artists into superstars.
