The song Evil Gal Blues was written by Lionel Hampton and Leonard Feather and was first recorded and released by Sextet with Dinah Washington in 1944. It was adapted from Evil Man's Blues (Lionel Hampton and Leonard Feather).
Michelle herself has been nominated for the W.C. Handy Award for best blues vocalist (she lost to Etta James) and has toured internationally. Now comes an exquisite live album, "Fortune Cookie," made with her band, the Evil Gal Festival Orchestra (the "Evil Gal" is plucked from a Dinah Washington song).
On the album, the orchestra backs a roster of legendary vocalists as they put their spin on blues tunes. Vocalists include Keb Mo, Bettye LaVette, Shameka Copeland, and Ledisi, who sings “Evil Gal Blues,” the song featured in this First Listen. “Evil Gal Blues” is well within Ledisi’s wheelhouse.
