El Merton College fue fundado en 1264 por Walter de Merton, Lord Canciller y obispo de Rochester. Se le considera el college más antiguo de la Universidad de Oxford, aunque esto no está del todo claro ya que este título se lo disputan el Balliol College y el University College.
