Guerech, Duke of Brittany. Guerech of Brittany, was Count of Nantes and Duke of Brittany from 981 to 988. Life. Guerech was the second illegitimate son of Alan II and Judith. He succeeded his brother Hoël I upon his death. Guerech had been brought up at the Abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, near Orléans.

Alan (sometimes Alan II of Brittany or Alan III of Nantes) (born after 981, died 990) was the only known son of Guerech, Duke of Brittany, and Aremberg. With his mother he founded the castle of Ancenis around 987, according to the Chronicle of Nantes.
A few years later the duke of Brittany took the title king, but the Viking attacks hit Brittany very hard and they lost their independence. Brittany became a duchy again in the 10th century and fell first into strong English influence until it after 1203 came under increasingly stronger French central power, a process which was completed in the 16th century.
