The Kiev Theological Academy (1819—1919) was one of the oldest higher educational institution of the Russian Orthodox Church, situated in Kyiv, then in the Russian Empire (now Kyiv, Ukraine ). It was considered as the most senior one among similar academies in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Kazan.
Besides NaUKMA, there are two modern theological schools which claim continuity with the academic traditions of the old Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The Kiev Theological Academy was one of the theological academies in Russia during the nineteenth century. The academy was a development of the Kiev-Mohyla Collegium that was formed under Metropolitan Peter Mohyla and was closed by the Bolshevik government that took control of the Russian Empire in 1917.
Throughout its existence the Kyiv Theological Academy was the only Orthodox higher school of theology in Ukraine. It was abolished by the Soviet authorities in 1920. The Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary was revived in 1993 under the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate.
Situated within the walls of the Kiev-Caves Lavra, is the Kiev Theological Seminary, which was resurrected in 1989, whilst the Kiev Theological Academy has been in operation since 1992.
