Turner made many albums with Johnson, Art Tatum, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Sammy Price, and other jazz groups. He recorded for several record companies. He also performed with the Count Basie Orchestra. During his career, Turner was part of the transition from big bands to jump blues to rhythm and blues to rock and roll.

Turner was a resilient figure in the history of blues -- he effortlessly spanned boogie-woogie, jump blues, even the first wave of rock & roll, enjoying great success in each genre.
One of the giants of Harlem Stride Piano, Joe Turner’s name is mentioned in the same breath as stride legends James P. Johnson, Willie “The Lion” Smith (MPS album Music On My Mind), and “Fats” Waller. Turner first came to prominence in 1928 with alto sax great Benny Carter’s Orchestra.
In 1940, the massive shouter moved over to Decca and cut "Piney Brown Blues" with Johnson rippling the ivories. But not all of Turner's Decca sides teamed him with Johnson; Willie "The Lion" Smith accompanied him on the mournful "Careless Love," while Freddie Slack's Trio provided backing for "Rocks in My Bed" in 1941.
Big Joe Turner originally did Hide and Seek, Tormenta en lunes, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, My Heart Belongs to You and other songs. Big Joe Turner wrote Honey Hush, Roll 'Em Pete and Cherry Red.
