William John Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland (17 September 1800 – 6 December 1879), styled Lord John Bentinck before 1824 and Marquess of Titchfield between 1824 and 1854, was a British Army officer and peer, most remembered for his eccentric behaviour.
Biography of William John Cavendish-Bentinck-Scott, 5th Duke of Portland (1800-1879) Originally known as Lord John Bentinck, the 5th Duke was educated at home. Despite suffering from delicate health, he served in the army from 1818, reaching the rank of captain in the Grenadier Guards by 1830.

He had always been very sensitive but after Adelaide turned down his proposal he became well known for his eccentricity. He was very shy and refused to see people, even his doctor. His personal valet was the only person who was allowed to see him.
