Sir William Boothby, 1st Baronet ( c.1638 –1707) Sir Henry Boothby, 2nd Baronet (1682–1710). He died unmarried at the age of eighteen. Sir William Boothby, 3rd Baronet (1664–1731). Half-uncle, son of the first Baronet by his second marriage to the aforementioned Mary Hill. Sir William Boothby, 4th Baronet (1721–1787).
It passes the minor fort of Castle Hill Boothby and then, 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Brampton, reaches the next major fort, that of Brampton Old Church, 6 miles (9.7 km) from Nether Denton and 30 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles (49.1 km) from Corstopitum.
At the crest of the hill Boothby saw a mass of Southern troopers crowded around the single cannon. After firing a volley with their carbines, Boothby ordered his men to draw their sabers as they charged up the slope.
The Boothby chapel in St Oswald's contains many monuments to the family and includes one for Miss Hill Boothby, the friend and correspondent of Dr Samuel Johnson. The most renowned of the Boothby monuments is that of a five year old girl, Penelope Boothby.
The monument includes the site of Boothby Roman fort which is located at a strategic position on the edge of a scar overlooking the River Irthing to the north. The fort was part of the Stanegate system, the first Roman defence system running across the Tyne-Solway route.
