George Stewart, Viscount Garlies, 8th Earl of Galloway. 1768-1834. He was born on 24 March 1768, the second but eldest surviving of eight sons of John, 7th Earl of Galloway, by his second wife Anne Dashwood, sister to the Duchess of Manchester.
In 1796 Lord Galloway was created Baron Stewart of Garlies in the Peerage of Great Britain, which gave him an automatic seat in the House of Lords until the Peerage Act 1963 extended that right to all holders of Scottish peerages. He was succeeded by his son, the eighth Earl.

Biography. Garlies entered the navy under the aegis of his uncle Admiral Keith Stewart † Lady Sutherland, who met him in France in December 1790, described him as ‘remarkably agreeable and clever and talks like a native of that country’.
