20 de ene. de 2014 · Smooth Jazz Archive is an occasional series that reflects on genre defining albums from the last forty years and one such release was Najee’s 1990 project ‘Tokyo Blue’. The way it blended jazz with R & B, placed him right at the top of his urban jazz game and his judicious use of featured vocalists was starting a trend in smooth jazz which has endured to this day.
Day by Day was produced by several producers including producer Barry Eastmond (Freddie Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Billy Ocean). In 1990, Tokyo Blue was released. This album was produced by Najee's brother Fareed, and is one of his most successful recordings to date.

That same year he also joined singer Freddie Jackson on tour and returned to his solo work in 1988 with Day by Day. Najee's brother Fareed produced his third album, 1990's Tokyo Blue. Well-received, it landed on top of the contemporary jazz charts, achieved gold status, and picked up a Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Album.
